Today would have been the 94th birthday of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks, but she passed away sadly on December 3, 2000 after a battle with Cancer. Brooks was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her 2nd book of Poetry entitled, Annie Allen in 1950. She was also named Poet Laureate of Illinois in 1968 and Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for the Library of Congress in 1985. This poem can be found in  The Bean Eaters.
